The Liquid Network got one hell of a security audit over the weekend. Nearly 4,000 bitcoin were withdrawn, supposedly by a party of white-hat hackers, before 3,400 bitcoin were eventually returned. The remaining 598.5 bitcoin stayed with the people who found the problem as what appears to be a self-appointed bounty. At current prices, that is not exactly a gift card and a thank-you note. It is tens of millions of dollars. The exact mechanics of the exploit are still being worked through, but the larger point is already staring us in the face: even teams that know what they are doing are entering a security environment that is changing underneath their feet.

And I think AI is a huge part of that change. We are standing right on the edge between the way software used to be written and the way it is going to be written from now on. Experienced programmers can already use AI to review massive amounts of code, compare new modules against an existing codebase, search for weird interactions and ask, essentially, “What did we just break?” That is enormously useful for developers. Unfortunately, the guy trying to break your software for real and for keeps gets the same tools. Give increasingly capable models enough open-source code and enough time, and vulnerability discovery starts getting cheaper, faster and available to far more people. We crossed that Rubicon. We are not going back.

That makes responsible disclosure much more important, which is why Ledger’s CTO calling out researchers who publish exploitable bugs before a fix exists caught my attention. Finding a vulnerability is not the same thing as responsibly handling one. If you discover something serious, go to the vendor. Show them how to reproduce it. Give them a reasonable period to fix it. Ninety days is a perfectly understandable default, especially if the deal is simple: fix it within the agreed window or the research becomes public. What does not help is throwing an exploit onto the internet because you want everybody to know you found it first. That is not security research but security theater. It's attention farming with somebody else carrying the risk.

It all begs the question:

> Does every codebase contain the seeds of its own hack?

And this new environment makes the old question of blockchain finality even more important. Cronos was exploited for roughly $120 million and validators responded by rewinding almost two hours of chain history, reversing nearly 11,000 blocks and restoring the network to a point before the attack. Yes, they recovered most of the money. They also reversed transactions from users who had absolutely nothing to do with the exploit. That is the trade. You can recover funds by rewriting history, but now everybody using the chain has to wonder how final “final” actually is. Bitcoin learned this lesson extremely early in its history. Other chains still seem determined to relearn it whenever enough money catches fire.

Meanwhile, Visa’s stablecoin settlement business has reached an annualized run rate above $20 billion, while DBS and Citi demonstrated a weekend dollar payment between Singapore and the United States using tokenized deposits that settled in minutes instead of waiting for normal banking hours. None of this means the banks suddenly discovered Bitcoin. They did not. What they discovered is that always-on digital settlement is useful. Stablecoins and tokenized deposits allow them to improve the dollar system without threatening the dollar system, which is exactly why they are comfortable with it. From a Bitcoin perspective, that's fine. Let them make their rails faster. Bitcoin is solving a different problem altogether.

And institutions that once dismissed Bitcoin are still finding ways to come crawling back toward it. Hargreaves Lansdown went from telling clients that Bitcoin was not an asset class suitable for portfolios to offering crypto exchange-traded notes. My, how the tables have turned. This is a pattern we have watched for years. Institutions spend a decade explaining why Bitcoin is unserious, dangerous or irrelevant, then eventually discover that their clients want exposure and there is money to be made providing it. Suddenly the philosophical objections get a lot quieter.

But all of the technical security in the world does not protect you from somebody showing up at your house. We end with the ugliest reminder of that: prosecutors in Mexico say four people were killed during an alleged attempt to steal a cold wallet believed to contain millions of dollars in bitcoin. A pregnant woman was among the victims, along with a child, an employee and the family dog. That is why I keep saying the same thing: stop advertising your wealth. Do not tell strangers how much bitcoin you own. Do not walk around looking like a human Bitcoin billboard. A hardware wallet protects keys from software attacks. It does not protect you from a person standing in your living room. Security is code, disclosure, network design, operational discipline and personal privacy. Miss any one of those, and the rest may not matter.
