BitMEX is closing under the shadow of a 623-Bitcoin lawsuit, Poolin is headed for bankruptcy, and smaller Bitcoin treasury companies are selling coins to survive. That may look like a wall of bad news, but it is something healthier: the market is finally separating Bitcoin from the weak businesses, leveraged schemes, and political theater built around it.

BitMEX announced that it is shutting down, and on the very same day it got hit with a proposed class-action lawsuit involving roughly 623 Bitcoin. The plaintiffs claim the exchange engineered liquidations, gave an internal trading desk advantages ordinary customers did not have, and swept the leftover collateral into its insurance fund. BitMEX says the claim is opportunistic and baseless and maybe it is. The company has faced this sort of thing before and defended itself. But the timing is almost comical. The doors are closing, and somebody is trying to get a claim through them before they lock it all down.

I do not think the lawsuit caused the shutdown. Six hundred and twenty-three Bitcoin is enormous money to normal people, but it is not necessarily an extinction-level event for a platform like BitMEX. More likely, the plaintiffs were already preparing the case and accelerated their timeline when the closure was announced. If they can prove what they allege, BitMEX should pay. If they cannot, then this becomes another legal dog-and-pony show. Either way, the era of casually trusting offshore leverage machines with your Bitcoin should have ended a long time ago.

Meanwhile, nature is healing. Smaller firms are selling Bitcoin, repaying debt, liquidating holdings, abandoning mergers, and trying to survive collapsing share prices. Poolin, once the largest Bitcoin mining pool in the world, has filed for Chapter 11 with liabilities far above its stated assets. Not pleasant, this is but it is not Bitcoin dying. It is nature healing. The wound is ugly, it hurts, and it is going to itch before the scab falls off. But the weak structures built around Bitcoin were never entitled to survive forever.

We got carried away when Michael Saylor arrived in 2020. I did too. At first it looked like corporations had finally discovered the obvious: hold the hardest money available instead of watching cash rot on the balance sheet. What followed was an army of imitators, many of them already half-dead companies searching for a stock-price miracle. It was the Long Island Iced Tea trick all over again. In 2017, struggling companies announced they were becoming blockchain businesses or mining companies and watched their shares explode. This time they called themselves Bitcoin treasury companies, borrowed money, bought Bitcoin, and hoped the number would keep going up forever.

I said it yesterday and I'll say it again: A "business" has a product or service somebody willingly pays for. It earns revenue, covers costs, and produces something useful. Sitting on a pile of Bitcoin while issuing increasingly elaborate debt instruments is not a product nor is it a service. The top few treasury companies may survive because they have scale, market access, and competent operators. Most of the smaller ones are probably toast unless they use whatever time remains to build something people actually want. Bitcoin can strengthen a real business. It cannot permanently disguise the absence utility.

As youth protests spread across several Indian cities, the Cockroach Janta Party is calling for nationwide demonstrations on July 24 and demanding that the education minister finally pack his bags. Not surprisingly, India has attempted to pressure GitHub into removing Bitchat. It is a demonstration of that regimes' utter disregard for its citizenry. Bitchat allows nearby phones to communicate through a Bluetooth mesh network without internet access, servers, accounts, or phone numbers. That makes it useful when governments shut down communications and naturally that makes governments uncomfortable. India reportedly gave GitHub three hours to remove the repositories while protesters were already turning to offline tools. But open-source code does not politely disappear because a ministry sends a stern letter. It gets copied, mirrored, and distributed somewhere else. Removing an app from a store can slow distribution. Trying to erase open-source code is a different proposition entirely.

Centralized platforms close. Leveraged companies collapse. Governments demand takedowns. Bankers support or oppose legislation according to whichever version protects their own business model. The personalities and corporations will keep rotating through. Bitcoin does not care. The cleanup will be painful, but it is necessary. The sooner the market stops confusing Bitcoin with every exchange, treasury stock, stablecoin bill, mining company, and executive wrapped around it, the healthier this entire ecosystem becomes.
